Netflix appears to still be making forward progress in terms of Android. Of course, we have long known they were working on something, but the when was always the big question. According to Greg Peters from the Netflix product development team;
“We are eager to launch on these devices and are disappointed that we haven’t been able to do so already.”
I guess we can take that as further confirmation that something is being worked on and something is coming. The issue behind the slow release seems to be DRM though.
“The hurdle has been the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android.”
That said, Netflix is coming and will arrive “early next year.” That is the good, but that comes with a little bit that may be bad — the launch will only be for “select Android devices.”
Bottom line, Netflix may be coming to Android, but it may not be coming to the Android device that you are carrying.
