Sprint to Epic 4G users; about that recent Android 2.2 update business, it was a leak so avoid it

It seems that Android 2.2 update news for the Samsung Epic 4G was little more than a leaked version and sure you can still follow the directions that were provided and have your handset running Froyo — but you are doing so at your own risk. Bottom line, according to Sprint that version is a test build and “is not approved software for Sprint production devices.

“Software version DI18 is the current production version of software.  When new versions of software are available, users will receive a notification from Google on their device stating that an upgrade is available for download and installation.  While we are unable to communicate a firm delivery date, rest assured that we are working on a software upgrade to Froyo and hope to have it out in the very near future.”

And there you have it, the Samsung Epic 4G is not the first Galaxy S branded handset in the US to get upgraded to Android 2.2, well, not yet at least.

  1. Why does it take so long for a carrier to send out the update? Shouldn't we get it almost same-day? Even if they need to bundle it with their software, their development team should be able to have a turn-around of a few days, a week at most.

  2. I'm just sick of this game they're playing…
I thought this was the real thing so I flashed it onto my phone

but now they're telling me it's not real… my phone's GPS is still BROKEN
speed is faster but my phone's always running at 100F degrees (please tell me i'm not alone)

do you think I could still get the real thing when it comes out?

  3. Well damn.

Is there any way to rollback? I really hate this update.

I hope I'm not locked out of the real update when it's available.

  4. I installed it already. For those contemplating doing the same…there are few issues to be aware of:
    1. Phone app can take a long time to launch
    2. there are occassional long stalls before icons appear on the screen
    3. GPS functionality has issues
    4. The phone call log is very slow to navigate and often freezes the phone for several seconds

    The pros:
    1. Tweeks to the UI like screen rotatation in both directions, color icons, silent mode, new mail client, updates to the music player, new twitter and facebook apps, new messaging interface, browser now labelled Internet, better calendar, new camera icon, new clock/alarm clock app.

Bottom line…I'm anxiously awaiting the official release, but I'm not going to revert because I like the new UI and I use my phone for more data than as a phone. If you are a heavy phone user, this update will cause you more angst than it is worth.

  5. Installed the update and have not had any issues, other than handsfree bluetooth still does not work (Blueant Z9i). Incoming calls and hanging up works fine like on Android 2.1, when the talk button is pressed to initiate a call nothing happens. Using Vlingo app, the headset gets connected and dial commands can spoken and executed. When the dial coma.d is being executed you can not hear the phone being dial nor can the person you called hear you. Pressing the headset talk button does not disconnect the call, 9the headset stays open, even if the other person hangs up. The only workround I have come up with,is to give the dial command, press the bluetooth disconect button on the, then press it again to reconnect the headset, youcan then hear the person you called and they can hear you, also the disconnet button on the headset will hang up the call. Not very handsfree friendly, I hope the real update fixes this problem. Other than that I have no complaints, and am hoping it won't be to difficult to upgrade to the real 2.2.
