Time Warner Cable is having some trouble with delivering content to its subscribers with its iPad app. It seems that programmers aren’t exactly happy with having their content on more than just TV screens without getting more money.
Because of complaints, Time Warner Cable is removing channels from Viacom, Fox and Discovery from the TWCable TV iPad app. In their place, TWC will put channels from “enlightened programmers” who embrace the idea of having their programming being more available. Looking through the new screenshots from the app, those channels will mostly be from BBC America. The channels that will be removed include:
Animal Planet
BET
CMT
Comedy Central
Discovery Channel
FX
MTV
National Geographic
Nickelodeon
Spike
VH1
This situation will likely be brought to a court of some sort in the future, Time Warner Cable believes it already has the license to broadcast the stations to any screen within the home, as long as it doesn’t leave the home. Cablevision is planning on launching a similar app in the near future, so TWC isn’t the only one. Expect to hear quite a bit more on this issue as the companies continue to fight.
