The one news source that treats everyday as April Fools’ Day has picked the perfect day to launch its iPad app. The app brings everything you know and love about The Onion to a convenient app so you can swipe through stories.
The Onion Tablet app is pretty basic, it’s all the same content you’d find on the website in a fancy new app. Stories are displayed in an Instapaper-esque format with just the pictures and text in the middle of the screen, though there is a banner ad at the bottom of the screen. You can then share those stories with friends on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Google Reader, or you can save them to Instapaper or Pinboard for reading later. Of course you also get all the images and video you’d expect from The Onion in convenient HTML5.
The app is pretty great, and better than using the website. It does run a bit slow on the iPad 1, though, Swiping through stories can be unresponsive, I’ve had a few instances where I had to swipe three or four times before it moved on to the next story. Thankfully there’s a sidebar for selecting stories if swiping doesn’t work. Still, the content is great, and some of the sluggishness could be alleviated with an iPad 2, or with an update to the app.
