Just over two years ago Cisco bought Pure Digital, makers of Flip video cameras. Today Cisco has announced that is is closing down Flip and will no longer make new camcorders in the popular line.
With the announcement, Cisco has said that it will “support current FlipShare customers and partners with a transition plan.” Otherwise, the consumer-focused division will be closed and nothing more will come out of it. It is certainly a sad day for those who are fans of small camcorders, though there’s no lack of other devices out there to fill in the gap.
With many of us using smartphones to record video now, the days of Flip have always been numbered for a large part of the market. There are still those who could find good use for the Flip Video Camera, but apparently it wasn’t enough for Cisco to justify the continuation of the brand. The cameras are still great for those who can’t justify getting a smartphone, or who really wanted a small, dedicated camcorder that’s not too expensive. If nothing else, at least there’s more of a reason to try out Sony’s Bloggie camcorders now.
