HTC is in the midst of a legal dispute with Apple. An International Trade Commission judge recently ruled that HTC violated two of Apple’s patents HTC uses in its Android smartphones. Apple could demand royalties from HTC or request a ban on HTC Android smartphones entirely. HTC is going to appeal the ITC’s decision based on evidence it claims was discovered by a ITC staff attorney. Google will be there to back HTC during its appeal.

During the Google Mobile Revolution conference, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt said Google “will make sure they [HTC] don’t lose, then” when asked if Google will provide financial support for HTC’s legal fees should its appeal be denied.

It isn’t clear what Google will do to aid HTC.

Schmidt looks at lawsuits such as Apple’s as a clear sign of success. Schmidt said “competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations.”

Google recently announced that 550,000 Android devices are being activated every day.
