We have seen a few bits on the Roku 2 lately, namely the FCC filing for the set-top boxes themselves, but also for the remote control. And well, it looks like the new players have since been officially announced by Roku over on their company blog.
The new players are coming just about as we had expected given the recent leaks, however that being said, they still seem like a nice upgrade to the current lineup. The new models are expected to come available later this month. And similar to what we have seen with the current lineup, there will be three models including the Roku 2 HD, Roku 2 XD and the Roku 2 XS. The prices will remain the same at $59, $79 and $99 respectively.
Breaking these down a little bit and we learn that the HD model will offer 720p video, the XD model will offer 1080p video and the XS model will do 1080p video and also include a USB port, wired Ethernet port and the new enhanced remote. Otherwise, the new players will come along with an updated Netflix app with support for subtitles, 1080p playback and “other goodies.” And lastly, for those considering the $99 XS model, you can also expect to get Angry Birds as a freebie.
