It appears that too much of a good thing can quickly turn sour. When T-Mobile revealed its new Value plans, the carrier allowed customers to decide whether or not they wanted to include a data plan with their service. T-Mobile is now changing its tune by requiring all smartphones to have some kind of data plan.

According to a document obtained by Tmo News, this new requirement will be put in place because the “existing policy is being misused.” The data requirement will be activated on August 8.

T-Mobile employees are being encouraged to try selling low cost smartphones to customers along with an affordable data plan.

A lot of questions have remained unanswered, which is normal with leaks such as this. Will current customers without data be forced to acquire a data plan even if they’ve already started a contract? Do these terms apply to phones purchased by T-Mobile or all smartphones in general? We expect an official announcement soon.
