Facebook is reportedly working on a rival to the popular photo editing and sharing application Instagram. Instead of creating an entirely different application like it did with Facebook Messenger, Facebook will instead incorporate different filters into its main mobile application.
The update that will bring photo filters to Facebook is expected to roll out within course of the next few months. According to Facebook engineers speaking to The New York Times, Facebook will have around 12 filters available at launch.
Facebook also tried to buy Instagram this year, but was unsuccessful.
Instagram currently has the ability to post edited photos to Facebook. However, if Facebook can create its own Instagram-like features, there will be less reason for users to depend on Instagram unless they’ve already built a list of friends inside the app.
