Fox is trying a new strategy to gain a following for its upcoming sitcom New Girl. The show will debut on Fox Tuesday September 20, but the pilot episode is available to download right now for free on iTunes.
The description of New Girl says it’s the first network television program to debut on iTunes before broadcast television. This move by Fox is a good opportunity for New Girl to gain some traction. People almost always flock to either extremely cheap or free goods and services even if they don’t necessarily want it. The ability to watch a brand new show a couple weeks ahead of time could help New Girl build an audience. It’ll need all the help it can get since a large number of shows on Fox get cancelled in their first season.
It’s also quite surprising that Fox will give anything away for free after essentially banning non-Hulu Plus and Dish Network customers from watching new episodes of its shows online for the first eight days after airing. Fox is taking by doing this. It’s risky to dangle something for free in front of consumers and then expect them to pay for a separate service to get that same experience in the future.
