A month after release, the iPhone 4S is now available as an unlocked phone for US customers, but it will only work on GSM networks.
The unlocked iPhone 4S isn’t subsidized at all, and starts at $649 for the 16GB model, with the 32GB and 64GB models costing $749 and $849, respectively. It’s great if you have a lot of money on hand and AT&T won’t let you upgrade just yet, or you don’t want to sign a new contract with them. Of course, an unlocked iPhone can also be used on any other GSM network, so you can bring it over to T-Mobile if you don’t mind only having EDGE instead of 3G or HSPA+ “4G.”
The unlocked iPhone 4S doesn’t even come with a micro-SIM, meaning you have to get your own from the carrier of your choice. Once you get it, insert it into the phone, and press the power button for a few seconds and you’ll be prompted on how to set it up. It’s a bit of a hassle, but it might be worthwhile for some, especially if you’re traveling internationally.
