HBO made a bold gesture towards Netflix recently by cutting off its stream of DVDs. From now on, HBO will not provide Netflix with DVDs of its programs. Despite HBO’s decision, Netflix customers most likely won’t even notice anything has changed.
According to CNET, Netflix can still acquire DVDs and Blu-ray discs for shows such as True Blood and The Sopranos from someplace other than HBO. Netflix streaming customers are unaffected because HBO programming isn’t available to watch instantly on Netflix in the first place.
HBO is doing pretty well for itself with its own streaming service called HBO GO. Much like Netflix, HBO Go has expanded to mobile devices. In the future, HBO Go will also become available on the Xbox 360 and PS3. However unlike Netflix, HBO Go is not available to everyone. You need to already subscribe to HBO through a cable or satellite provider to use the HBO Go service.
In the end, Netflix won’t lose any customers over this. In fact, it may just gain customers if its original programming becomes a hit.
