Nokia may have switched to Windows Phone for its smartphones, but we can’t forget that it still has Series 40 phones out there. The Finnish company has announced that it has sold more the 1.5 billion S40 phones worldwide.
The Nokia 7110 was the first S40 phone when it debuted in 1999. Back then it was fairly simple, you really just needed your phone for calls, SMS, and maybe a few games of Snake. Series 40 has continued to be shipped on phones like the Asha 303 that Nokia calls “Smartphone Lite.” They’re capable of web browsing, email, social networking, and games that are more complex than Snake.
The 1.5 billionth phone was the Asha 303 which comes with a copy of Angry Birds Lite installed. It was sold to a 21-year-old woman in São Paulo, Brazil. The platform has grown a lot in the past 13 years. It might not compete with smartphones, but 1.5 billion sales is nothing to laugh at.
