I was terrified at what Microsoft would charge for Windows 8. History has shown us that upgrading to a new version of Windows isn’t cheap. Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 Professional for example costs $158 from Amazon right now. To everyone’s surprise, Microsoft revealed a Windows 8 Pro upgrade will only cost $39.99 as a download.

Anyone (within 131 markets) who is currently running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 is eligible for this upgrade. If you prefer to have a physical copy of Windows 8 Pro, you’ll be able to pick it up for $69.99. We still don’t know when Windows 8 will launch, but this particular upgrade promotion will run through January 31, 2013.

That’s not all though. Purchasing the Windows 8 upgrade will also come with the Windows Media Center for free. Windows Media Center will allow you play DVDs. Without it, you’ll have to download a third-party solution.
