After thinking it over for several days, I decided to pre-order a Nexus 7 over the weekend. Unlike GadgeTell’s editor Robert Nelson, I chose to order the 8GB Nexus 7. I understand I’m only going to have access to about 6GB of space once I power the tablet on, but I think that’s enough space for the variety of apps I’ll eventually install on it. My Kingston Wi-Drive is going to handle storage and streaming for music, photos and videos.
The 16GB Kingston Wi-Drive can be purchased from Amazon for $50, but I’ve had one for months. Basically, the Wi-Drive doubles as a storage device and a media streaming device. I can store media files on it, and push the content to my Nexus 7 wirelessly. Since the Wi-Drive creates its own wireless access point, I don’t need to be connected to the internet to view my media. The Wi-Drive also has a bridge mode that lets me connect to my home Wi-Fi connection and the Wi-Drive at the same time.
I really don’t mind carrying the Wi-Drive with me because it’s quite small. My smartphone is larger and heavier than the Wi-Drive. I’ll also have peace of mind knowing I won’t have to rely on an internet connection to enjoy my content.
