Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic hits the States officially today
A day later than expected, the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music is officially here in the US. After a false alarm at their NY and Chicago stores yesterday where they got the phones in, but didn’t actually begin selling them, the phones are now officially on the shelves.
Nokia delves into the touchscreen market with a music smart phone that many people have been looking forward to. While not really up to the iPhone like lots of people were hoping for when it was first being talked about, its reviews seem pretty positive.
It has 8 GB of memory which lets you store up to 6000 tracks and also supports all of the big digital music formats. You’ve got the 3.5-mm jack, and surround sound stereo speakers. The XpressMusic gives you quick access to music (as well as videos and photos) through the “Media Bar.” You can also use the Media Bar to link directly to the Web.
Implementing the latest S60 OS, the touch screen is a 3.2-inch widescreen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. You also have a 3.2 megapixel camera featuring a Carl Zeiss lens. You can do one touch photo uploads as well, which is handy. Users get a few input methods to choose from – the QWERTY keyboard, the virtual alphanumeric keypad, or a pen stylus. You can even use a guitar pick if that is your thing.
A million Nokia 5800s shipped
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic , the one with “Comes with Music” service, has hit a landmark event. One million Nokia 5800s have been shipped around the world. The phone has also just been released in the UK.
It took Nokia four months to reach the million mark; the 5800 XpressMusic was released in October of 2008. It only took the original iPhone 74 days to hit one million, and one weekend for the iPhone 3G to accomplish the same feat. Like many phone manufacturers, Nokia entered the touchscreen phone market after Apple changed the game. The 5800 is their first major attempt at a touchscreen phone.
Nokia takes the limelight with its Comes with Music service and 5800 XpressMusic phone
Nokia has taken the mobile world’s centerstage today with the slew of announcements it made during the Nokia Remix event which happened simultaneously in London and Singapore. An enhanced S60 mobile platform, an online music store a la iTunes and, of course, a new music phone with touchscreen features, a la, well what else, but the iPhone.
The enhanced S60 Mobile Platform
Nokia’s S60 mobile platform which runs on Symbian OS finally gets a much needed upgrade in its 5th iteration. Key features of this fifth edition S60 is none other than touch UI and support for tactile feedback. This simply means that Nokia mobile phones using the S60 OS will now have touchscreen features similar to the iPhone.
Likewise, the S60 is also bringing enhanced web browsing capabilities to the soon to be released S60 mobile phone. This is made possible through Adobe Flash Lite 3 support. More details after the break.
