Panasonic to aquire Sanyo
Despite media reports across the world, Panasonic is remaining mum on the question of whether they are indeed planning acquire Sanyo. Reuters and the Tokyo press are reporting that their sources say the deal is done and will be formally announced in a press conference on Friday.
Sanyo, the world’s largest manufacturer of lithium ion batteries, has been struggling and would most likely welcome the sale. The new company that will result will become Japan’s largest electronics manufacturer and prove a formidable rival of Hitachi. Together the two companies would have revenues of over 11 trillion yen, which equals a little over $100 million US.
Sony snaps up Gracenote for $260 million
Sony has announced they have purchased digital media information powerhouse, Gracenote. For those unfamiliar with Gracenote, they are behind the CDDB, which makes it simple and easy to get track listings when ripping your CD collection. The deal involves some $260 million being changed hands, along with some other contingencies being sent Gracenote’s way.
Sony plans to operate Gracenote as a separate business unit, and both companies seem to be happy with the deal. According to Tim Schaaf, Vice President of Sony Computer America;
Blockbuster to acquire Circuit City?
Blockbuster is all set to acquire Circuit City, hoping it would become a very huge electronic gadget chain aside from being a global provider of movies and gaming entertainment.
Blockbuster is reportedly willing to bid over $1 billion, larger than the company’s current value in the stock market, to create a chain similar to the Apple Inc.’s stores. Combining the two companies together, a 9,300 store chain will be readily available to sell movies, games, and gadgets to the US. If and when the deal is finalized, Blockbuster movies and games for sale or rental will be carried by Circuit City stores nationwide while Blockbuster stores will also sell electronics and gadgets.
Acer set to acquire E-Ten, entering into the smartphone business
While the deal has not been made official just yet, Acer has announced having entering into an agreement to purchase E-Ten. For those unfamiliar, E-Ten is a mobile phone maker, who has been getting well known for their Windows Mobile-based Glofiish smartphone lineup.
