The Kindle Fire won’t trap you in Amazon’s ecosystem

When Barnes & Noble announced the Nook Tablet this week, it made sure to let the public know it’s more than a colorized e-reader. Apps such as Netflix, Pandora and Hulu will be available on the Nook Tablet to make up B&N not selling movies and music itself. Amazon on the other hand has its own MP3 and video store. The impression is if you get a Kindle Fire, you’ll be forced to go through Amazon if you want the best media content. Well that’s not the case. Just like the Nook Tablet, the Kindle Fire will fully support third-party apps that don’t require tapping in to your Amazon account.

RIM says sorry with free apps

Last week was not good for RIM. As the iPhone 4S was building up steam for its release, customers in India. Europe, the Middle East, the United States and Africa were unable to access crucial BlackBerry services. RIM finally fixed everything on October 13, but not before outages that lasted three days in some countries. RIM is apologizing to its BlackBerry users with apologetic words and free apps. Over the next four weeks (starting on October 19), apps that are worth over $100 combined will be free from BlackBerry App World. Customers can pick them up until December 31.

Amazon sets rules for developing Kindle Fire apps

Amazon has laid out some ground rules on developing apps for the Kindle Fire. Amazon wants to make sure that developers follow strict guidelines so that the first Kindle Fire-optimized apps will work as well as possible. Among the restrictions are Amazon’s requirements that apps do not use Google Mobile Services and a number of additional features the Kindle Fire does not have.
