LG rolls out slick phone UI, invites you to play with it via desktop widget

LG is very proud of their S-Class OS and want everyone to get some playtime with it. So the easiest way to do that is to create a downloadable widget for your computer and let you play with the 3D tumbling and sliding fun of the S-Class OS right from the comfort of your very own machine. This is roughly the opposite of what Apple did with their OS-X migrating from computers to the iPhone OS.

The download is an interesting beast. The widget uses InstallShield to install on your machine. You are asked to agree to what I am sure are ridiculous terms and away the install goes. Clicking on the cube icon launches the UI widget. A cube appears allowing you to spin through the four main sides of the cube: Desktop, Widgets, Games, Multimedia.

LG Versa offers detachable keyboard and touchscreen

When it comes to touchscreen phones, the one thing nobody can agree on is the onscreen keyboard. Some people don’t mind using it at all, while others refuse to buy an iPhone because it lacks a physical keyboard. With their new phone, LG is looking to appeal to both crowds, and surprisingly, the phone has an interesting new design.

The LG Versa, at first glance looks like the LG EnV2 that’s also on Verizon’s network, but it lacks a keypad on the front of the device. Instead, it is covered in what appears to be a faux leather exterior with OLED display, and call/end buttons. Opening up the case reveals the touchscreen and the keyboard, again taking a cue from the EnV2. The phone can be taken out of the case and carried around without it, limiting it’s usage to the onscreen keyboard on the 3-inch screen.

LG Arena looks to out do the iPhone

With Mobile World Conference upon us in Barcelona, there’s bound to be plenty of amazing cell phones being shown off. While there is no new iPhone to be found, there are a few phones that have the potential to level the playing field in terms of what a cell phone can do. One example would be the new LG’s new flagship phone, the Arena.

Looking at the Arena, it seems to take a few clues from other touchscreen phones that try to compete with the iPhone. But, the user interface, LG’s new 3D S-Class User Interface, is what sets it apart. Think of it as somewhere like the iPhone interface with Compiz effects and you’re almost there. It certainly looks impressive in the demos, and should run well given its powered by a “powerful AMD processor.” There doesn’t look to be anything resembling multi-touch that could cause legal issues, but there doesn’t seem to be much need for it in the GUI.

Of course, if the only difference was the GUI it would be a rather boring phone, but LG packed a lot of interesting features into the Arena.
