Dish Network to launch streaming movie service

Dish Network supposedly has big plans for its recently acquired Blockbuster brand. A Bloomberg source says that Dish Network is going to reveal a new streaming service in October. The launch of this new service will occur during a time when Netflix is vulnerable due to the negative response iit received after raising prices for its DVD and streaming combo plan.

200 additional Blockbuster stores will close

More bad news has struck Blockbuster. Dish Network, the chain’s new owner, will be closing 200 additional stores. According to The Wrap, the closures will leave close to 1,500 Blockbuster stores still standing.

Blockbuster lowers select movie rental prices to $0.99

Following its acquisition by Dish Network, Blockbuster announced that it is lowering the prices for rentals starting today. It’s also having a special promotion in which customers can rent an unlimited amount of movies for only $2.99 until July 4.

Dish Network buys Blockbuster

Today, Dish Network won a bid in a bankruptcy court auction for Blockbuster. The troubled company brought in a maximum bid for $320 million. At the end of the day, Dish Network will pay $228 in cash for Blockbuster and all of its assets. The deal should become final in the second quarter of this year pending court approval.
