Your local Circuit City to become a Best Buy?
In a wave of closings, layoffs, and cutbacks one company in the gadget world is looking to stand their ground against the economic tide. Best Buy, the tech and gadget superstore, could hugely benefit from store closings, but one particular may catch their eye.
Circuit City is looking to soon close thousands of stores in the U.S. alone as it liquidates its assets and closed shop. Best Buy is looking to potentially snatch up some of those locations around the country according to CEO, Brad Anderson. Anderson apparently told Reuters recently that quality financial standing was more important at the present time, though.
Who’s on Crack in Tech 1.30.09
Where did this past month go? It started off far-too-fast with CES then into the daze that follows. My attention is now attuned to what is going to come out of Barcelona’s phone festival next month. But, since that is weeks away still, let’s look at the stuff that drove me nuts this past week. More bad economic news can only mean more desperation.
On tap this week: Circuit City’s realizes their errors, Suck on this, Cox, Psst: Google, you’re a web company, Apple’s got a new iPhone-Holy Duh?, Hooked on your carrier’s crack?
Circuit City liquidation sales surpass expectations
It seems as though you have to go out of business these days to make any money. The companies hired to liquidate Circuit City’s remaining stock announced today that sales have reached an astounding $450 million over the past two weeks. They expect that the liquidation sales will end sooner than expected due to the astounding number of shoppers that have turned up to snatch up their discounted electronics.
Zip to help Firedog clients
Circuit City’s closing has left millions of customers trying to decide which electronics store they will use. The same is true for those that used Firedog, Circuit City’s installation arm. One competitor, Zip, has stepped in to offer a discount to former Firedog clients.
Black Saturday at Circuit City locations
As soon as news hit that Circuit City would be holding liquidation sales at its remaining US locations, buyers began to line up around the block in hopes of scoring the best deals. Liquidation companies came in and started dramatically slashing prices in order to make the most bank off of whatever stock is left.
The lines were long at most locations on Saturday, reports stating that many were 100 people or more deep. Televisions, video games and other electronics have started with a 10 percent discount while other merchandise, like furniture, cables, and accessories carried discounts of 20 and 30 percent off. Many branded items, like Apple iPods have yet to receive a discounted price. When the final numbers for Saturday came in, sales were up 25 percent for the retailer.
“Set your guns to liquidate” – Circuit City
Circuit City officially announced today that they are moving to request the court’s permission to liquidate. The company was still employing over 30,000 in the US and hopefully, many of them saw the writing on the wall. Today’s announcement isn’t that much of a surprise.
The company filed for bankruptcy protection back in November of last year. In December, the company listed 567 stores in the US and if I am reading this right 765 stores and dealer outlets in Canada. Does Canada even have 765 people? Do each need their own big box store? I think I’ve located Circuit City’s folly.
