It may be something we do not expect, or quite possibly it is something we just do not think about, however, it seems that the homeless population in Washington DC is beginning to make good use of cellphones. A recent story in the Washington Post estimates that anywhere from 30-45-percent of the homeless population in Washington DC are carrying phones. Of course, based on the report it seems they are relying on pay-as-you-go models as opposed to a fancy smartphone, but even that is helping them improve their quality of life.

In the article there are several good examples of how they are being used, ranging from blogging about their experience, to using them in an effort to find a good place to stay or even use a restroom. Of course, there are some that are using them in much more efficient ways such as letting their families or loved ones know they are safe, to keep track of their food stamps and even helping with employment issues.

New domains are always exciting, and if you can remember the most recent major one (.me) you will remember the vast amounts of money are usually spent as people bid for the best of the selection. However .tel will not involve vast amounts of money or even much media coverage, because it is something different and a new way of looking at domain names.

These domains will not be about websites, but more of a way of sharing the information of the domain owner, and will not involve any building, hosting or managing. Yesterday, Google let loose their video chat to the masses. If your account doesn’t have the option yet, Google promises within a day or so you will. The new option for video is very simple and many users are wondering, how does this differ from other online video services like Skype?

Skype is a full-featured video calling program. It is easiest to think of Gmail voice and chat as augmenting their instant messaging chat rather than something completely new. One of the biggest differences is Gmail’s version only allows video chatting with other Gmail users who have downloaded the plug in (about 2MB). With Skype, users are allowed to contact both online and offline numbers, albeit for a fee. There is not an option to go offline with Gmail voice and chat.

You know those late night e-mails you send out pleading for your girlfriend to take you back? Then, you wake up the next morning and remember all the reasons you broke up with her in the first place and think oh my God what did I do?!? and wish there was a big old RETRACT button on your e-mail? Well, until they come up with that e-mail retract button, they have something else. Something that will at least sort of slow you down and make you think before you send that pleading missive of unrequited love. Something that makes you solve math problems.

Yep. You read that right. Solve math problems. See, GMail Engineer Jon Perlow over at Google Labs figured that if you are actually going to sit there and be able to think through solving some math problems, then just maybe you are in fact thinking clearly, and actually do want to send that email and the desire isn’t just an alcohol induced psychosis. For those of you who ordered your G1 and just can’t wait for it to get here, you can get your G1 fix right now (sort of). A new site, launched by T-Mobile, offers a G1 emulator (pictured) so you can play around and get the feel for it ahead of time.

The site offers a full 360 degree view of the phone, visual instruction guides so you know what you’re doing, and, of course, the emulator itself. Now, I’ve got to say, I tried this and if I wasn’t sure what to think of the G1. I just don’t know if this would sway me into buying it. It’s not that I think the G1 might not be a great phone, but because the emulator, itself, is pretty buggy and several features don’t work right.

Watch out iPhone, there’s a Storm on the horizon. Soon to be released by Verizon, the Blackberry Storm just may give the popular iPhone a run for their money.

Originally rumored to be called the “Thunder,” the name became the more powerful “Storm.” And the name just may fit. The device features a 3.2 megapixel camera that takes both stills and video (the iPhone’s 2.0 megapixel camera can’t do video unless you jailbreak it). The Storm also has turn-by-turn navigation (nope, iPhone doesn’t). Want to swap out batteries? The device formerly known as the Storm has a removable battery (sorry, iPhone. We know your users have to go to Apple).

Mystery has surrounded the whole HTC Dream G1 launch from T-Mobile since word broke about the Android-powered Dream. There has been speculation running rampant about what the first Android headset is going to look like. Websites had mock-ups showing different views of what people thought it might be. There was even a video. Well, apparently, there have been photos leaked “from a trusted source” of what the G1 is going to look like…and there are a few things people didn’t see coming.
