Compaq Airlife 100 features smartphone components in a netbook’s body

What do you get when you put a smartphone’s innards into a netbook chassis? A Compaq Airlife 100, of course! Except that HP decided to call it a “smartbook”, which seems to suggest the smartphone-netbook hybrid nature of the Airlife 100. It is said to feature a Snapdragon processor (rumored), a 16GB SSD, 3G and more »

Sony issues battery recall

Yet another case of the few ruining it for the many. Due to “at least 40″ reports of laptop batteries overheating and causing fires as well as potential property damage, Sony is recalling 35,000 Lithium Ion batteries in the US and another 65,000 in other countries. In a stroke of genius, none of these batteries were actually put in Sony laptops. Instead, most of them (32,000) are in HP Pavilion dv model and Compaq laptops, and to a lesser extent Toshiba Satellite and Tecra laptops (3,000) and only 150 Dell Latitude and Inspiron laptops. The batteries were made way back in October 2004 to June 2005.

More after the break.

Compaq announces new Presario CQ70 laptop

Recently, a Circuit City flyer showed a new Compaq laptop listing, the Presario CQ70. This laptop sports a lot of great features and is pretty cheap considering what it comes with.

First off, it runs on Intel’s Pentium Dual Core 2GHz processor, 3GB DDR2 RAM, a big 17 inch screen, with 1440×900 resolution, and comes with GMA 4500MHD graphics processor. In addition, it comes with a 205GB hard drive, DVD burner, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi capability, integrated webcam, 3 USB ports, VGA port, and comes with a full-sized keyboard. Since it comes with such a keyboard, it probably acts more like a desktop than a laptop, however, no word on how long the battery life is.

HP to release a new smartphone

In an effort to expand its device business beyond the borders of just the corporate crowd, The Wall Street Journal just announced that Hewlett Packard is getting ready to release a new smart phone that is also going to be marketed to the “average joe consumer.” It will be sold by a (yet un-named) mobile carrier in retail stores and will debut in Europe.

The new smartphone will be the latest in the line of HP’s iPaq devices. The most recent iPaq smartphone, which was geared toward the business crowd, was launched this past June. The company began selling iPaq-branded devices in 2002, when it acquired Compaq Computer Corp; although earlier iPaqs focused more on businesses and weren’t usually sold in retail stores. So, they are obviously trying to make a leap into a broader market.

HP Compaq 2133 UMPC

Although not yet released, the rumored HP Compaq 2133, touted as a “lifestyle accessory” by HP, may be just that.
