Starz wanted you to pay more for Netflix
Yesterday, Starz announced it would not be renewing its contract with Netflix that’s set to expire on February 28, 2012. From that date forward, Starz content in addition to movies from Disney and Sony will no longer be offered for instant streaming. In a statement, Starz said in so many words that it feels its content is valuable enough to be more profitable elsewhere. Today, a report has surfaced that points to one of the main reason why Starz pulled out.
Starz will pull its content from Netflix
Netflix subscribers have about a half year left to consume as much Starz programming as possible. Starz has decided to remove all of its content from Netflix as of February 28, 2012. This is the date where the contract with Starz and Netflix expires. Starz is no longer interested in using Netflix to distribute its library of content.
T-Mobile implementing pay-per-use mobile web on September 15
On September 15, T-Mobile will be adding a pay-per-use mobile web option to 11.4 million smartphones that don’t have data plans. This addition will not be optional to customers and it can’t be removed online or from the smartphone.
Verizon confirms tiered data plan rates and start date
It has been no secret that Verizon was planning to scrap unlimited data plans. Verizon previously confirmed this would be the case, but did not confirm the pricing or other specific details that were leaked a while ago. Any hope of a last minute change of plans by Verizon has been dashed. The wireless carrier has gone on the record with FierceWireless stating the new tiered data plans will begin on July 7.

Back in May, Verizon’s CFO Fran Shammo hinted at Verizon’s plan to stop providing unlimited data for its customers. T-Mobile loses contract customers, gains plenty of prepaid customers
T-Mobile USA released its first quarter 2011 results today. T-Mobile is still in fourth place behind Verizon, Sprint and AT&T, but could shoot straight to the top if its merger with AT&T is approved. Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene’ Obermann said in a press release that until that deal is complete, T-Mobile USA will continue to “compete aggressively” in the United States. It’s going to need that fire because T-Mobile USA is losing its contract customers.
Verizon believed to be ditching 1-year contracts
An internal document leaked to Gadget University states that Verizon will no longer offer 1-year contracts for most of its customers. This change is expected to go into effect on April 17, 2011. The rules governing 2-year and month-to-month contracts will remain unchanged.
RadioShack to shut down more than 400 Sams Club kiosk sales locations
As a result of an expiring contract between RadioShack and Wal-Mart, RadioShack will have to shut down over 400 kiosks in various Sam’s Club retail stores. Verizon Wireless testing unlimited everything plan for $99
Sprint likes to tout its Simply Everything Data plan which includes unlimited talk, text, and web for $99 a month. Verizon Wireless offers unlimited talk, text, web for $119 in most markets except for Los Angeles and San Diego where Big Red is testing a cheaper, unlimited plan according to Current Analysis.
