This year’s hot holiday tech trend: cheap gadgets

With the economy still on a downturn, tech retailers are preparing for the upcoming holiday season by offering a variety of cheap gadgets. With no hot new must have gadget this year and consumers not as willing to snap up pricey gadgets, retailers are hoping that cheap gadgets will have enough appeal to keep their sales up.

Netbooks, digital cameras, digital picture frames and speakers are some of the items retailers are hoping will be big sellers for the frugal set. Best Buy is also hoping to cash in on the growing popularity of e-books by setting up sections in stores dedicated to several varieties of e-readers all going for less than Amazon’s Kindle. RadioShack is offering a 7 inch portable TV for $199, and Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have all slashed prices on their video game consoles. Walmart meanwhile has dropped the price of some Blu-ray players to $99.

Some retailers, such as Sears and Kmart, are hoping their layaway programs will help encourage consumers to make some big ticket purchases. Electronics are already the most popular items placed on layaway. Sears also plans to follow Best Buy’s lead and offer e-readers this holiday season.

Canon, not to be outdone by itself in announcing the VIXIA HF S11, is also announcing a number of new digital cameras and printers. The line-up includes six new digital cameras, including a new flagship PowerShot G-series, and four new printers, including two All-In-Ones with built-in Wi-Fi. Olympus recently announced a few new digital cameras for the FE lineup of cameras. The new digital cameras include the FE-5020, FE-4000 (shown above), and FE-26. Each share some common features and will begin shipping next month.

To start, we have the FE-5020, which is the headline camera featuring 12MP capabilities, sporting a 5x super wide zoom, 2.7 inch LCD screen, and various Magic Filters to make the pictures it takes supposedly better in quality. In addition, it features advanced face detection technology, i-Auto mode, and AF tracking. It is set to be available in white, gray, brown, and blue.

Panasonic’s new, sleek Lumix

One of the main goals of camera manufacturers is to design cameras that not only work well, but also have a sleek appearance. Panasonic hopes it has achieved this with the LUMIX DMC-FS25, the newest member of the company’s LUMIX FS-Series of digital cameras.

With the new LUMIX DMC-FS25, you’ll be able to take 12.1 megapixel photos while not having to lug around a bulky unattractive camera. LUMIX DMC-FS25 is more than just a pretty face: it has features like a 5x optical zoom, a 29mm wide-angle lens, and a 3.0-inch LCD screen. It also has a tracking feature that allows the picture taker to track its subject during movement in order to keep it in focus. Additionally, the camera has the ability to monitor the lighting in an area and make adjustments as necessary. You will also get rid of that annoying shutter lag time with the new LUMIX digital camera, Panasonic reports the time to be as little as .006 seconds.

Consumers happy with current options for sharing photos

Remember back in the old days when you had to take pictures with film, then get it processed, and then finally order prints? Nowadays, you can press a few buttons on your cell phone, and your friend across the country can receive your picture. You can even upload digital pictures from your camera onto your computer for safekeeping, and then order prints with ease.

The Consumer Electronics Association sponsored a study called, Digital Imaging: A Focus on Sharing. In one part of their study, they found that 65% of all consumers are happy with the options that they have in sharing photos, protecting photos, and backing them up.
