Who’s on Crack in Tech: 08.28.09

Welcome to this week’s “Who’s on Crack” where we pick apart the stories from the past week that refuse to have any relation to reality. With announcements just around the corner to fill up the holidays, things are getting zany, even silly. Clearly, more than a few companies appear to to be on crack.

This week’s winners:

  • Microsoft sees black
  • Way too many eReaders
  • Twitter business model to fail
  • FLO TV bringing Personal TVs?

Flexible touchscreens made by ASU

The first flexible touchscreen display has been created by Arizona State University’s Flexible Display Center. ASU’s Flexible Display Center has already made several advances in flexible displays, but this is the first with a touchscreen. There is no glass in this display.

Since this display is using E Ink, the device only uses power to turn the pages. Since the FDC is partially backed by the government, expect to wait on this technology. I would imagine the military uses of this kind of technology will probably get priority before it trickles down to regular folks.

Countdown to Kindle 2: 7 days to go

We are 7 days away from Amazon’s press conference in New York City. The popular belief is that on February 9th, Amazon will unveil the new version of the Kindle. Gadgetell will be there and we’ll have plenty of pictures.

For a couple of months, images of what looks to be the Kindle 2 have been floating around. If those images are accurate, then this design looks much sleeker. The real question is what other features have been added to the device.

Amazon Kindle 2 now rumored to be launching early-2009

This certainly is not the first we are hearing about the Kindle 2, however it looks like anyone who was holding out is going to have to wait a little longer. Initially, the Kindle 2 was expected to hit the market this past October, which would have given it a good launch to pick up some holiday sales. According to the reports, the delay was caused by Jeff Bezos in order to make some last minute changes to the software.
