As a company Microsoft has always looked to the future of what out lives will be. Today it’s Office team released a vision of what our world will look like in 5-10 years. The video for the Office team’s vision is below, and hopefully can be realized sometime within our lifetime. It shows screens everywhere more »

Russia developing its own dual-screened 4G smartphone for next year

You don’t hear of many phone manufacturers coming from Russia. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a phone from any Russian-based company. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of making such a device. In a recent video, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and state technology official Sergei Chemezov have more »

Opinion: Computer world waking up to iPad: “It’s a trap!”

The PC world is now waking up to this tablet craze called iPad. And the only thing that could make the industry wake up: sales. The iPad is beginning it’s disruption. According to All Things D writer John Paczkowski, UBS analyst Maynard Um says the iPad is having a negative impact on the entire PC more »

A Clear Indication Where Technology Is Headed: Skinput

I feel like technology is at a point where a new mind-blowing, game-changing discovery is just around the corner. Well if Skinput is any indication as to how we will be interacting with data and devices, than I’d say we are closer than I thought to this breakthrough. Skinput, a technology currently in research by more »

Immersion thinks haptic feedback is the future of touchscreens

“People like feeling things.” That’s probably Immersion’s thinking as they explain the future of computers. They also might think since they are a haptic technology developer that haptic feedback will be everywhere. What’s haptic feedback? It’s when you receive tactile feedback — like an area of a surface vibrating when you press it. Immersion was more »

What the Future Holds: Flexible OLED will change everything

Back at CES, Sony showed off a flexible 2.5-inch OLED screen. Sir Howard Stringer joked that Jay-Z isn’t the only one who could squeeze Beyonce as he flexed the display while it played a Beyonce music video. But what exactly is this technology for? It seems like a cool concept, but what practical applications do flexible OLED screens have? Let’s take a look into the future.

Study issues new wake up call to cell phone makers

A new study from In-Stat predicts your cell phone will undergo a major change in the next five years. Technologies such as Wi-Fi and video will drive this change and push many consumers to smartphones. The study also says smartphone sales will continue their rise in popularity.

But it isn’t all good news for cell phone makers: “Consumers are nearing their limits adjusting to the added complexity of converged devices,” says David Chamberlain, In-Stat analyst.

I am going to have to stop here and say, “duh.” Really? You needed to fund a study to come up with this info? Clearly this company doesn’t read Gadgetell (they would have saved money on a study if they did). Here is what i am talking about:

Not quite a hands on: Toshiba Wide LDC/DMFC Internet Viewer

Every once in a while, there is something at CES that just makes you drool. I found one of those items while I was touring the Toshiba booth. Granted, I was not able to actually get my hands on this, unfortunately it was locked tightly behind glass, not to mention it was also just a more »

Possible Internet “rules” being discussed in British government

There has been a lot of talk in legal circles since the creation of the Internet about how the Internet should be regulated, and if it should be regulated at all. The most vocal section of the echo-chamber that is the Internet is dead set against any sort of regulation. I imagine that British Minister of Culture Andy Burnham isn’t one of those people.

Burnham is hoping to negotiate with President-Elect Barack Obama’s administration to try and bring about some sort of “international rules” regarding English language websites. One idea given is to give websites movie-esque ratings which would presumably have porn sites or sites with an immense amount of violence as the highest possible ratings. Another possible idea is forcing ISPs to offer connections where only child-friendly websites would be available. That could open up a lot of new and old issues regarding net neutrality in a way, as well as what’s deemed suitable for children.

Glimpse at the iPhone of 2012

Let’s get this out of the way right up front: this phone runs on something not invented yet. In the future, let’s assume we can make anything clear or invisible. Very well, with that caveat out of the way, let’s take a look at the future of phones: GlassyGlassy.

As you can see, or see-through, this phone is conceived in a variety of form factors, each as elegant as the next. The impressive concepts are created by Mac Funamizu. Sadly, Mr. Funamizu doesn’t believe we’ll discover a new form factor as he iterates his design in the usual suspects: flip, slider and candy bar. Certainly we can come up with something new, yes?
