Who’s on Crack in tech: 2.20.09

I believe this week we’ve witnessed the birth of crack 2.0. Like Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo, it follows up the original but with more flair and outlandish moves. From the dance of the pretty phones in Barcelona to the hubbub over Hulu,I am not certain if I should bother with this list or just point out who is not on crack at this point. Here we go, try to follow along, huh?

This week: Phone Parade: a.k.a. Ed’s Pants, Window Mobile 6.5 is for suckers, Hubbub over Hulu, and Verizon pirates Fave Five.

One plug to rule them all

The Mobile World Congress was abuzz this week when GSMA announced the possibility of having one standard charger for all mobile types. Instead of having a specific charger for each type of mobile phone, manufacturers can create one type that will charge all devices. This should not be too difficult to achieve since most cellular phones are 5 volt devices.

Benefits of having a universal charger is that it will be very convenient for consumers as well as create less waste for the environment. The organization Green Plug feels that this goal is not only attainable with mobile phones, but other electronic devices as well. The company has proposed a universal plug that will power not only mobile phones, but other devices like notebook PCs, printers, game controllers, power tools, portable DVD players, wireless routers that run off of different voltage. Their device converts the power source and communicates with the device in order to provide function without wasting energy.

Why this phone you’ve never heard of just won “Best Mobile Handset”

The BlackBerry Storm. Nokia E71. LG KS360. Any one of those hot new phones should have taken home the coveted “Best Mobile Handset” from this year’s GSMA in Barcelona. Alas, they all fell short of the INQ phone that looks like it is straight out of 2002.

INQ, who the heck are they?

This small company has not received a lot of press, until now. The company’s products are online for sale in the UK, Ireland and Australia, but more are on the way. The INQ1 is their first offering.

How upset must other makers be? They lost to this?

On paper this phone isn’t much: 3.2MP camera, 50mb of memory; no Wi-Fi, no GPS, no video calling, no voice dialing. The phone’s design is a rather simple slider, a d-pad and some buttons grace the phones front side. Certainly nothing we’ve not seen before. So how can this thing best the big names? Keep reading.

Dolby goes mobile

We all know the name Dolby is generally synonymous for high quality sound. Now, Dolby Labs just announced at the 2009 GSMA Mobile World Congress details about a Media Generator. Sounds pretty darn impressive doesn’t it?

So what is this Media Generator? It’s a “preprocessing and encoding solution for mobile multimedia content.” So what this means is that is uses specific coding efficiencies. These efficiencies make file sizes smaller while at the same time helping to deliver great sound. This part of the whole Dolby release is actually geared toward service providers and content distributors, not joe schmoe phone user-although it obviously will affect him or her.

Vodafone and HTC make Magic together

It seems as though HTC has been busy. Two phones released just yesterday, the Diamond2 and the Touch Pro2. Now, they’ve made magic.

At the GSMA 2009 show in Barcelona, HTC pulled a new rabbit out of their hat. Well, you might recognize the HTC Android phone as the G2, but the new pulled-out-of-a-hat-with-doves name for this is the Magic. The HTC Magic is exclusive to Vodafone in Europe right now, and there isn’t too much information leaking from the magician’s hat about it just yet.

What we do know about it is that it will feature HSPA, HSDPA/WCDMA (900/2100MHz), WiFi, and have GPS connectivity. There is also going to be a 3.2 mega-pixel camera (no flash), and what will make many happy — Cupcake will also be there. The Magic has a 3.2 inch HVGA touch screen along with a trackball navigator. However, kind of odd, it doesn’t have a slide out-QWERTY keyboard like the T-Mobile G1. With it, you’ll also have several email options (of course Gmail is one of them), as well as POP3 and IMAP accounts. Customers will be able to access the Android Market and download apps and games for their smartphone.

We can’t trust this Windows Mobile leak

Several screen shots are making the rounds as of late, purporting to be a leak of what Microsoft will unveil to the world next month in Barcelona at the GSMA World Congress. The shots show a new home screen, browser improvements, and a new way for touch screens to navigate through Windows icons. Don’t believe it.

While Microsoft could learn a thing or two about keeping secrets from Apple, I don’t believe these screen shots are real. I hold that it is far more likely some punk with Photoshop is having its way with the blogging media. There are a few points that make this case for me.
