Recession-O-Rama Deals for the Weekend 2.15.09
Hopefully all our readers had a good Valentine’s Day and are ready for some more Weekend deals. Today, I found some deals ranging from earbuds, to a netbook, to printer, and a free computer program. Let’s get started.
Dell quietly adds artwork options to the Mini 9, Mini 12 lineup, also adds pink, red
This is for the folks who had their hearts set on grabbing an Inspiron Mini 9 or Mini 12 netbook from Dell, but were not really feeling the black or white options. Rest easy, because Dell has announced some new design options as well as the pink and red colors for both the Mini 9 and Mini 12.
The new colors are officially being called “Cherry Red” and “Pretty Pink” and sadly they are both coming with a $25 premium. Hopefully, Dell will have a change of heart on that added cost. If you remember back, the Apline White originally had that same premium, but it was quickly removed.
As for the artwork options, there are five designs available, all of which are from artist Tristan Eaton. As for that extra cost involved with the artwork, these designs add an additional $50 to the purchase price. Keep reading to check out some images of the five available artwork designs…
Dell rolls out 32GB SSD equipped pink, red Inspiron Mini 9′s in Japan
Remember that red colored Inspiron Mini 9 that Michael Dell was spotted carrying around during the All Things Digital conference this past May? Well, it appears that some customers will soon be able to grab an Inspiron Mini 9 of their own in red, and also pink. Dell has just released both new models, but more »
Dell removes $25 premium on alpine white Inspiron mini 9
Back when Dell originally announced the Inspiron Mini 9, one of the complaints that we saw come up often was that the Alpine White coloring came with a $25 price premium. Well, in a little bit of good news, Dell has quietly lowered the price premium and it is now the same “Included in Price” more »
Vodafone to offer Dell Inspiron Mini 9 for free, but with a catch
Quickly following the announcement of the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 earlier this month, Vodafone made their own announcement about the upcoming availability of a subsidized model that was expected to be available “in late September.” At the time the details were light, and pricing was still unknown. The latest addition to this story comes as more »
Dell Inspiron Mini 9 begins to ship, enters customers hands, gets unboxed
Thanks to the magic of the Internet, we can pretty much guarantee that just about every big tech product that is released will be showcased online in the form of multiple unboxings. Overall, these can be a way to make you slightly jealous if you really want a product and cannot afford one. However, they are also a great way to see “real world” comparisons and give you a better idea of what exactly you are purchasing.
So without any further build up, the latest item to begin unboxing ceremonies is the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. Just like any good unboxing video, this offers a few comparisons showing off the Mini 9′s true size. Overall, things seem to be looking good with some quick first impressions that it is a “solid, well-made, light netbook with a very good, albeit glossy, screen.”
In the meantime enjoy the video…
Dell Inspiron Mini 9′s may not have integrated 3G?
Despite some earlier reports and statements coming from inside Dell, its now being speculated that the Dell Inspiron Mini 9′s that are being sold here in the US do not have that previously mentioned integrated 3G.
If you remember back, the statement regarding the inclusion of the 3G came from Dell spokeswoman Anne Camdenm and she mentioned that “there’s a hidden bonus, however: an integrated 3G card.” Of course it was not mentioned just which of the Mini 9′s have that integrated 3G card and now its looking like its just those that will be sold outside the US, namely through Vodafone.
Gadgetell Roundup: Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Reviews
Dell’s entry into the netbook market came with few surprises, the early rumors were pretty much spot on with the official announcement, of course that has not stopped Dell from making quite a splash so far. Overall it seems there are some good points and some bad points with the Mini 9, but that could be said with just about any tech item out.
The Mini 9 features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, either 512MB or 1GB of RAM, either a 4, 8 or 16GB SSD, a 4-cell battery, and the 8.9-inch display with a 1024 x 600 resolution. Additionally the Mini 9 comes in either Obsidian Black or Alpine White, but sadly the white costs an extra $25. Finally users will have the option of either running a Dell customized Ubuntu 8.04 or Windows XP as their operating system of choice.
Like I mentioned, most of the specs were pretty much expected, one surprise however did come with the after announcement acknowledgment of the already integrated 3G support, of which we are still hoping to see some US based carrier announcements soon, currently only Vodafone has announced the availability.
A nice part about these reviews is they seem to offer quite a bit of comparison between other netbook models. Of course, what one may consider a drawback, may be not a big deal for others. Just take the storage options as an example, for some the 4GB, 8GB or 16GB may be small or way to low, but for me the 16GB is more than enough as the netbook for me is a secondary computer and I can always use an SD, flash drive or even the cloud for extra storage. But enough with the specs, let’s see what the early reviews have to say…
Inspiron Mini 9 gets the teardown treatment, courtesy of Dell
It seems we are not even going to have to wait for the Inspiron Mini 9 to get in the hands of consumers before we begin to learn about the inside. Dell has gone ahead and posted a the service manual for the Mini 9, and it contains more than a few pictures of the internal guts. And judging from what we can see, the Mini 9 is going to be fun to play with, and seemingly easy to upgrade on your own.
Just by removing a simple panel from the bottom, users will have access to the SSD, Wi-Fi card, the RAM and even an unused mini PCIe slot. Of course we also see that SIM card slot located behind the battery. Keep reading to check out some of the images, courtesy of Dell…
Dell’s little secret; The Inspiron Mini 9 already has Integrated 3G
With the launch of the Inspiron Mini 9, it seems Dell has decided to hold back the details on what most would consider a pretty important feature. The fact that the Mini 9 already includes an integrated 3G card. According to Dell spokeswoman Anne Camdenm “there’s a hidden bonus, however: an integrated 3G card.” Of course the first reaction is nothing more than, Very Cool! However you cannot help but wonder if that “hidden bonus” added any additional cost that may go unused by lots of buyers. Could Dell have shaved a few extra bucks off the pricing? Maybe, maybe not.
Anyway, as of now, Dell has not announced (other than Vodafone) which wireless carriers would be picking up the device. This could mean for some slow initial sales here in the US. Personally I was planning to purchase the Mini 9 for myself, but I may wait for some carrier announcements with the hope of seeing a subsidized version become available.
