XBMC 9.11 releases just in time for your now old computer

We’ve all been getting quite excited about Boxee recently it seems, without the acknowledgment of that which Boxee came from. For those who don’t know, the popular Boxee came out the XBMC project. While Boxee has been busy with tons of updates and announcements as of late, XMBC hasn’t had too many updates until the more »

S1Digital attempts to solve the whole-home video and audio problem

S1Digital introduced what it calls the “Digital Entertainment Platform.” This system uses three parts: “an Entertainment Server, Media Center clients and a control solution.” You load all your content on the Entertainment Server which can support up to 32TB of hard drive space. The server also has a Blu-ray player that can also play CDs more »

Boxee coming to all Windows users, soon into beta

Boxee has long been the up and coming media center for Linux computers and Macs, with its support of almost any major file type and Internet apps. It’s been stuck in alpha for a while and was limited to invite-only status. In one meeting last night not only did Boxee announce some new apps, it more »

Score a Drobo or a Sony HDTV if you’ve got Boxee app writing skills

The folks behind Boxee, the well known media center software available for Linux and Mac with a Widows version for a few invitees, is holding a contest. The latest edition of the Boxee software has an app store called “App Box.” To make sure that the App Box doesn’t end up empty, Boxee is holding a Dev Challenge.

All you’ve got to do is write an application for Boxee. If the app is a People’s Choice winner, then you get a Drobo. If it wins the Judge’s Choice award, have yourself a Sony Bravia XBR 46-inch television. Those are some nice prizes.

Maybe you’re a developer and don’t have ideas. I use Boxee, so let me suggest a couple of things. How about a DVR plugin to make Boxee a more complete media center solution? Perhaps an app that interfaces with your TiVo so you can watch recorded television over your network (Plex has a plugin like this already)?

Asus unveils the home theater capable Eee Box B208

Asus has added another model into their Eee Box lineup, this time its home theater capable B208. Overall, I would not say this is a powerhouse, but due to the small size, both in terms of the keyboard, mouse, and the actual PC, plus the addition of a remote this would make a nice addition more »

Hulu says “Bye bye” to Boxee

Hulu announced today that its content providers have requested Hulu’s content to be removed from Boxee. If you haven’t heard of it, Boxee is a free media center and is an offshoot of the XBox Media Center that currently supports Mac and Linux (Windows support is coming). In the blog post announcing the cut, the Hulu team comes off almost as frustrated as I am as a Boxee-user.

Hulu has a right to be quite frustrated. It just launched a big ad campaign during the Super Bowl. Now is not the time to have your content providers pushing you around and forcing you to alienate part of your user-base. Boxee’s response in its blog was disappointed, but understanding.

Boxee pumping out invites, expands Windows private alpha

Boxee, the open source media center that has already established a huge presence on Mac and Linux, is expanding its presence on Windows. Starting today, more and more Windows users will be invited into Boxee. We talked to a Boxee representative and he told us that previously, very few invites were being sent out to more »

Digital Architect combines your media center and architecture

Trying to set up a decent media network in a home can sometimes be a pain, especially when your home isn’t really built for it. You might need to drill a few holes in some walls to run some cables or to hang an LCD or plasma HDTV. Then there’s the challenge of hiding all those wires and actually setting up everything the way you want it, which can take quite a while. Wouldn’t it be nice if your home came fully equipped with everything you need, or if you could have someone make your home network into more than just everything connected to a central server?

Shadi + company can do just that. They have a short documentary called “Digital Architect” about everything they do over at Cisco’s Digital Cribs. From what I can see in the documentary, it would cost quite a bit of money, but it is truly amazing.

Shuttle annonces new small form factor media PC

Everyone’s favorite small-form-factor PC maker, Shuttle, announced a new Media-centric PC with support for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD playback (does anyone really care about HD-DVD anymore?). The XPC G5 6801M features an AMD Athlon 64 X2 1 GHz processor, an nVidia chipset and runs Microsoft Vista. It packs the usual stuff for a media center PC, more »
