News bits: Pioneer, Cisco, and OS X for your PC

When news falls through the cracks… wait, that’s “The Daily Show’s” bit. There’s lots of stories in the tech world and sometimes they get buried by Google, Microsoft, and Apple’s every move. Here’s a round up of stories that you may have missed. Pioneer wants to be in your car, Cisco wants to make splash with the business world, and OS X for everyone is coming.

Is 3D video all that it’s cracked up to be?

At this year’s CES, there was plenty of 3D demonstrations. I got to see both Sony’s and Mitsubishi’s 3D technologies. Panasonic also had its 3D video which I was unable to see first hand.

The difference between this crop of 3D and the old red and blue glasses-style 3D is depth perception. Older movies used gimmicky events like throwing objects at the screen or objects protruding out at you. This latest version of 3D requires polarized glasses and is like looking through a window.

Watching the demos, you can really tell how far away objects are in relation to others. A college football game was shown and it looked terrific. Watching the football go from the quarterback to the receiver you could get a sense of how far away the receiver was without seeing field markers.

And the battle to be the King of 3D continues! Mitsubishi is continuing to muscle their way into the top of the stack with their line of 3D-ready Home Theater HDTV products. Frank DeMartin, Vice President, Marketing, at Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, says “3D in the home is becoming an exciting reality and Mitsubishi’s 3D-ready Home Theater TVs will play a key role in allowing consumers to enjoy 3D movies and gaming.”
