Anti-piracy crusaders caught pirating? Yes!
Video streaming company Vevo, used by both Sony and Universal to showcase their artist’s videos on YouTube, was caught red-faced recently when guests noticed they were illegally streaming an NFL playoff game at their recent Sundance party. Sony and Universal have been loud voices in the fight against piracy. So what’s up with the blatant more »

Who’s on Crack in Tech 09.04.09
Welcome to this week’s “Who’s on Crack,” where I get to point out events of the week that lead us to suspect perhaps drugs were involved in reaching their decision to move forward. Behind every product is someone who said, “This is going to make us rich!” and about 90% of the time consumers say, “Are you freaking kidding me?” Here’s my list for this week:
- Guitar Hero course at NYU ruffles feathers
- NFL wants to control Twitter
- MS to drop WinMo 6.5 in October
- The poor hate knock offs too
NFL bans Twitter, Facebook before, during, and after games
The NFL has announced that beginning this season, players, coaches, and league officials will be banned from tweeting or posting Facebook updates starting 90 minutes before games and until all post-game interviews are completed. The ban extends to anyone who represents a player or coach on any such accounts as well. But wait, there’s more. more »
Super Bowl ads all over the web
Whether you’re a sports fan or not, I’m sure you were aware that the Super Bowl was last night. While the game turned out to be a fun one, there are always the commercials for those not interested in football.
NBC.com, Hulu.com, and NFL.com have all the ads collected on each of their sites. Strangely, NFL.com and Hulu make you sit through an ad before you get to watch a Super Bowl ad. Hulu seems to have the best video player of the three, the NFL site actually has game highlights (in 4:3, why?), and NBC is probably the most convenient since you don’t have to sit through a pre-ad ad.
Patriots QB joins forces with OLPC
New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has announced he is teaming up with the One Laptop Per Child project and buying 1,500 of them to send to children in Uganda. They will be shipped to his sister Nancy who works with the Infectious Diseases Institute there. Continued after the break.
Sprint to broadcast NFL games live
So, you like football and you like your Sprint cellphone. Unfortunately, you are not always home during the big game, or you don’t get the NFL channel where they broadcast a bunch of games per season and so you miss those big games. Now, you can enjoy all the football games on NFL’s exclusive channel straight from your Sprint phone.
The deal signed by NFL and Sprint started back in 2005 and they have now reached another agreement for Sprint to carry the 40% of games the NFL channel shows. The first game available on a Sprint phone will be tonight (11/6/08) with the Cleveland Browns playing the Denver Broncos. It’s unfortunate that the NFL season has already started, and so Sprint won’t be able to carry every game, but they will continue carrying the 8 games on the NFL network over the next 7 weeks. . . .
NFL gets hip, time to kill the cable company?
The typically content-stingy NFL has made the decision to broadcast it’s games live over the net. Heck yeah! This is super-exciting news not just for sports fans but for those who can’t wait for the TV to Internet transformation. Soon your TV won’t be held hostage to the Cable company for content. And content is more »
