Give Ovi Maps 3D a try right now

Nokia has rolled out a web version of Ovi Maps in 3D. When I say 3D, I don’t mean technology that requires special glasses and expensive hardware. 3D in this case refers to 360-degree movement around the map. At this time, 20 cities are included in the desktop version of Ovi Maps including Stockholm, New York and Copenhagen. A couple cities even allow you to get a 360-degree panoramic view of the location at eye level.

Mozilla wants you to Fashion Your Firefox

There are a lot of add-ons for Firefox out there. Over 5,000 of them to be more precise. But, its a bit hard to actually find the most useful ones unless you’re searching for them specifically. Mozilla is trying to help us all out with that. It recently opened a page called “Fashion Your Firefox,” an easier way to find the add-ons that you might find useful.

Obviously, Fashion Your Firefox doesn’t list every add-on, only about 40 of those available at the moment. It’s broken up into categories ranging from “News Junkie” to “Shutterbug,” “Digital Pack Rat,” and a few other categories for how people use their internet browser. According to the FAQ, there are a few points the add-ons needed to meet. They had to be popular, compatible with Mac and PC (I suppose Linux doesn’t count?), easy to use (oh, right, linux is supposedly hard to use), and “ffer a well-rounded set of functionality.” Sounds a bit reasonable to me.

New toolbar warns users of unreliable E-tailers.

At last, a browser toolbar that’s unobtrusive and useful! Trustpilot has introduced a new toolbar that warns users if an E-tailer is reliable or not. Search results are given a check mark in green, orange, or red. Green means the site has a high rating and many positive reviews, orange means the site has an average rating, and red is a sign to stay away — the site has mostly negative reviews and lots of user complaints.

Trustpilot gives its ratings based on reviews and media stories it collects from the web. At the present time, it claims to have over 1 million reviews and stories. The download is quick and free and is unobtrusive. Keep reading for more details about this helpful toolbar.

Get those extension cords ready, the day is coming when even your car will be wired

Held just this past week in San Jose was the Plug-In 2008 conference; where automakers, utilities, battery manufacturers, and academics, along with plug-in advocates from all over, were all there with one goal in mind: how to figure out how to get these cars on the road in big numbers. They realize that this change isn’t going to be simple, whether needed in many ways or not. The automakers have to figure out a way to market the technology to consumers who for the most part know nothing about it. On the part of utilities, they have to develop the infrastructure that would enable millions of people without a garage to plug in their cars. And it’s up to all of them to figure out a way to make the vehicles affordable. Joe Consumer probably isn’t going to buy it if it costs as much as the Batmobile, even if it does save him on gas.

Some of the main issues tackled at the conference addressed just these concerns. First and foremost obviously being, that you have the advocates claiming how the electric cars will save the planet. Hurrah! While most of us by this point are kind of selfishly just wanting something that doesn’t cost so darn much every time we go to the gas station. Hey, this way we can save the earth and our stomachs. Win/win.
