Forget pointing the remote at your TV, RF is coming

According to a new study by ABI Research, the wave of the future for remote controls is RF. Expect a lot of RF remotes by 2014. The great majority of remotes still use infrared (IR) so you need a line of sight between your remote and your device. How often have you had to crook your arm just to make sure your TiVo got the signal?

The study says RF is the future since it can be used to convey data back from the device you are controlling and doesn’t need line of sight to operate. ABI Research also says that companies like Sony will start shipping RF remotes soon with its Bravia line.

Audiovox to challenge Logitech’s Harmony

At this year’s CES, Audiovox introduced several new universal remotes aimed at giving Harmony some stiff competition. Here’s a look at them.

The Acoustic Research XS offers both simple remote set up and an online app that allows the user to customize its operation and functionality. When it hits stores this spring it will be available in two versions. The ARRX18G model has a 2.2 inch color touch screen, controls up to 18 devices, and has a rechargeable battery with a SRP of $249.99 while the ARRX15G model has a 2.2 inch LCD screen, controls up to 15 devices and runs on 3 AA batteries with a suggested retail price of $179.99.
