Blockbuster Express Kiosk is changing its pricing structure
The price for renting movies at a Blockbuster Express kiosk is about change starting on November 8, 2011. Blockbuster Express will use what it is calling a $3-$2-$1 pricing structure. If you want to rent a new movie within the first 28 days of its release, you’ll have to pay $3 for the first night plus tax. If you want to rent a movie 28 days after it releases, the price will be $2 plus tax, and if you want to rent a movie after the first 90 days of its release, you’ll have to pay $1. An additional $1 fee will also be accessed for Blu-rays and movies that are kept for additional nights.
Redbox slightly increasing prices October 31
On October 31, the cost for renting a DVD through Redbox will increase. Don’t worry, it isn’t anything like the 60% Netflix price hike. It’s more like 20%. Instead of paying a $1 to rent movies, the price will be $1.20. It sounds worse than it really is. The price for renting Blu-rays and games will stay the same at $1.50 and $2.00 a night.
Time Warner selling movies that are still in theaters
Time Warner has began offering its video-on-demand customers access to brand new films on the same day they hit theaters. Starting today, Time Warner is selling pay-per-view access to the film Trespass starring Nicholas Cage and Nicole Kidman for $6.99 .The film is also available in theaters today as well. Time Warner will follow-up this strategy with Marginal Call on October 21.
Universal decides not to go ahead with $60 Tower Heist rental
Last week, Universal announced plans to offer the upcoming film Tower Heist as a $60 rental for Comcast customers in Portland and Atlanta. The rental fee would have covered unlimited viewings for 48 hours. It turns out theater companies such as Cinemark and National Amusements didn’t like that idea and threatened to not show Tower Heist if Universal went along with its plan. Universal has since decided to not offer Tower Heist as a home rental.
$20 for a Google Chrome laptop says exec
According to Forbes, Google will indeed offer at Chrome-powered laptop for a low monthly fee. According to a Google executive, for $20 students will be able to get their hands on a Google Chrome OS laptop/netbook. We reported on the rumor earlier and it is expected to make headlines when announced today at Google I/O. more »
Redbox plays games: 21,000 locations to get games
Redbox, the vending machines that currently rent movies for $1 per day, announced today that the company will begin rolling out video game rentals to more than 21,000 machines starting June 17. The movies will rent for $2 per night. Redbox had been testing video game rentals at 5,000 locations over the past two years. more »
Disney makes TiVo the happiest box on Earth
Disney movies, independent films, anime and Bollywood flicks have something in common – starting soon, you’ll be able to download them directly to your TiVo. TiVo has struck deals with Disney, CinemaNow and Jaman.com to get new downloadable content to TiVo boxes everywhere.
The content will be rolled out over the next couple of weeks. Stuff from Jaman.com, like indy films, anime, and Bollywood flicks, will be available today. CinemaNow brings the Disney content and that won’t be available until next week. More information, including pricing, after the break.
DVD kiosks kick movie prices down
Companies are finally realizing that with the economy the way it is that if they want people to keep renting their movies, they need to make them less expensive. Enter the DVD kiosk.
DVDPlay, the country’s first automated and remotely managed DVD rental kiosk company, recently noticed a need to change their pricing to make it even easier and cost efficient for the customers. Starting October 1st, all of their DVD rentals will be only $1, and this price will extend to some of their Blu-Ray titles as well for a limited time.
