In this economy, more and more companies are working together. An announcement out of Sharp and Toshiba says the two may combine resources on solar technologies. ZTE’s solar powered cell phone
Digicel’s put together a pretty smart design by adding a solar panel to the back of its newest phone, the Coral-200-Solar (manufactured by ZTE). It appears to be a very simple phone, so I wouldn’t expect any fancy bells and whistles like a touch screen or camera.
First the pros: The phone is relatively sleek. It can use solar power to charge the phone, and if you have access to an electrical source, you can charge it the conventional way. It’s a good start.
Samsung intros the solar-powered Blue Earth mobile phone
Samsung has recently unveiled the eco-friendly Blue Earth mobile phone and despite the fact that the back is a solar-panel the phone still offers a decent overall look. To begin with, the obvious look of the handset itself, the front side contains a large touchscreen display and the back features a solar panel that is reported to be capable of being able to make a call at just about any time.
The Blue Earth also features an “Eco Mode” that allows for items such as display brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth to be run in a more energy efficient mode. Other eco-friendly features that you will find on the Blue Earth is the “Eco Walk” function that will count steps thanks to the built-in pedometer as well as an energy efficient charger. Of course, what eco-friendly phone would be complete without proper packaging, the Blue Earth is made from PCM (a recycled plastic) that is made from old water bottles and will ship in recycled packaging?

Shiro intros a new green MP3 player
Shiro recently announced the availability of a more green MP3 player, which uses solar cells on the back to recharge its internal battery. A pretty cool idea, but the question remains, is it practical? Before I get into the specifics of the player, I want to mention how the solar cells work in terms of battery life.
The SQ-S Solar Media player, uses both solar cells and conventional USB to charge its internal battery, so it hasn’t fully gone solar. It takes 6 hours to become fully charged under direct sunlight, but only 4 hours when using normal USB charging. Now, if it were to go fully green, solar charging would have to occur a lot faster, and since the sun isn’t always shining, there has to be some back-up way to get charged.
