Starz will release an app akin to HBO Go

A couple months ago, Starz announced it will not renew its content licensing agreement with Netflix when the current deal expires at the end of February in 2012. Netflix didn’t want to continue offering its content to Netflix subscribers at the standard Netflix monthly price. Starz wanted its content to cost a little extra. Netflix put a spin on the subject by making it seem like its customers wouldn’t really miss Starz anyway. Starz is moving on in a way that could change the way content providers view customers that have decided to cut the cord.

Starz wanted you to pay more for Netflix

Yesterday, Starz announced it would not be renewing its contract with Netflix that’s set to expire on February 28, 2012. From that date forward, Starz content in addition to movies from Disney and Sony will no longer be offered for instant streaming. In a statement, Starz said in so many words that it feels its content is valuable enough to be more profitable elsewhere. Today, a report has surfaced that points to one of the main reason why Starz pulled out.

Starz will pull its content from Netflix

Netflix subscribers have about a half year left to consume as much Starz programming as possible. Starz has decided to remove all of its content from Netflix as of February 28, 2012. This is the date where the contract with Starz and Netflix expires. Starz is no longer interested in using Netflix to distribute its library of content.

Netflix streaming gets a little more interesting, Starz Play content added

Netflix and Starz have just announced a new partnership that will bring some additional quality content to the “Watch Instantly” category. The Starz partnership will add a total of 2,500 movies and television shows, about 1,000 titles will be made available immediately with the remainder coming over the next few weeks.

This new content from Starz will be made available to all Netflix subscribers under the terms of the “Watch Instantly” category, meaning that your subscription level will determine how many hours of streaming you receive each month. In addition they will also be offering a Starz only package for $7.99 a month that will allow subscribers to only view content from the Starz Play package.
