Netflix is getting more competition from new Verizon and Redbox partnership

Verizon was rumored to be planning a Netflix-like streaming video service during December in 2011. Today the company has confirmed those rumors by announcing a joint venture with Coinstar’s Redbox brand. The two companies will work together to create a new online video service while retaining Redbox’s traditional DVD and Blu-ray rental business.

Dish Network dropped the ball with Blockbuster Movie Pass

After watching Dish Network’s announcement of the BlockBuster Movie Pass, I can’t help but to partially view it as a missed opportunity. We thought Dish Network would be announcing a full-on Netflix competitor. Blockbuster wasted no time attempting to lure Netflix customers away following the 60% price increase. Given the recent Qwikster announcement, Dish Network had a perfect opportunity to deal a significant blow to Netflix. But now, non-Dish customers such as myself with no interest in satellite service have no reason to leave Netflix.

Dish Network is trying to buy Hulu

It was recently revealed that Dish Network is preparing to launch its own streaming video service in October. Though details on the matter are scarce and unofficial, the service is believed to be a Netflix competitor. The streaming service is said to include movies from Starz, which will be exiting from Netflix in February 2012. Dish Network is also one of the three companies currently bidding on Hulu.

Amazon announces deal with NBC

Amazon announced that it has made a deal with NBCUniversal that will give it access to part of the Universal Studios movie library. This includes movies such as “Elizabeth,” “Babe” and “Billy Elliott.” The company reached a similar deal with CBS last week that gives it access to 2,000 episodes of older CBS TV series’. more »

Netflix gets sued for lack of subtitles

In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the district of Massachusetts, Netflix has been sued by the National Association of the Deaf for not having enough of their content closed-captioned enabled.
