HBO stops providing Netflix DVDs of its shows

True Blood DVD

Verizon reportedly plans to take on Netflix in 2012

Netflix is reportedly going to get another competitor in the form of Verizon. According to Reuters, Verizon plans to release an online streaming service sometime in 2012. One of the most interesting facts regarding this announcement is Verizon plans to release its streaming video service in areas where potential customers don’t have access to Verizon FiOS television and internet. By doing this, Verizon will spread its influence much farther in the competitive online video market. Also, by releasing a streaming service for customers that can’t get FiOS, Verizon is not risking cannibalizing its own television service.

Watching streaming videos may lead to a higher internet bill

Web-based video services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and others have one important thing in common – they aren’t associated with cable companies. Many people (myself included) have decided to cancel cable service in favor of internet video consumption and over-the-air broadcasts. As subscribers for cable services decrease, cable companies are trying to figure out a way to make up for all that lost revenue. One solution may be to charge customers based on how much internet bandwidth they use in a billing cycle.

Starz will release an app akin to HBO Go

A couple months ago, Starz announced it will not renew its content licensing agreement with Netflix when the current deal expires at the end of February in 2012. Netflix didn’t want to continue offering its content to Netflix subscribers at the standard Netflix monthly price. Starz wanted its content to cost a little extra. Netflix put a spin on the subject by making it seem like its customers wouldn’t really miss Starz anyway. Starz is moving on in a way that could change the way content providers view customers that have decided to cut the cord.

Google Music? Sure, why not?

Now that Google Music is out, the big question is will anyone use it? I can’t speak for everyone, but in my case, Google stands to make at least a couple bucks off me. That’s something iTunes never did.

Kobo Vox gets a musical boost thanks to Rdio

While Amazon and Barnes & Noble were busy trying to top each other’s tablet by announcing third-party app support from popular multimedia companies, poor Kobo was standing on the sidelines hoping customers would give the Kobo Vox a try. The Kobo Vox wasn’t surrounded on all sides by the likes of Netflix, Hulu or Pandora when it was announced, and it made the tablet look inferior compared to the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet. Now, Kobo can at least say owners of the Kobo Vox can get access to Rdio.

You’ll soon have a Pandora button on your Roku remote

Netflix isn’t the only company that is having their service branded on remote controls. Pandora, the online streaming radio station, has joined up with Roku to expand its brand awareness. Starting this month, the Roku 2 XD and Roku LT will ship with remotes that include a button dedicated to launching the Pandora application.

Netflix announces latest expansion plans, will be coming to the UK and Ireland in “early 2012″

Putting an end to a series of rumors, Netflix has offered up the latest details in terms of their international roll-out plans. The details come by way of a short and sweet press release which states that they will begin offering unlimited TV shows and movie streaming in the United Kingdom and Ireland in early more »

Netflix is now available for Honeycomb tablets

The latest update to the Netflix Android app finally brings support for Android tablets running anything over 3.x. With this update, Netflix has pretty much covered the majority of the Android user base. Previous updates brought Netflix to Android devices that run Froyo and Gingerbread.
