TiVo to support more web video including podcasts via RSS
Thought having Season Pass recording, direct Amazon movie downloads, and Netflix Watch Instantly was enough for TiVo? Think again. Starting August 5, 2009, TiVo will be offering over 100 free podcast channels, including content from networks such as G4, FOX, and CBS. Beyond these channels, independent video podcast providers can add their content to TiVo via RSS and H.264 video.
TiVo bringing Blockbuster OnDemand to its DVRs
TiVo already has a number of services available in its Video on Demand section including Amazon and Netflix. This morning, they added Blockbuster OnDemand. If you have a Tivo Series2, Series3, HD, or HD XL, you will be able to access the Blockbuster content.
Also part of the deal TiVo DVRs will be sold at Blockbuster’s online and brick and mortar stores. That makes plenty of sense. Why wouldn’t Blockbuster sell a device that allows you to access their OnDemand service?
The service will be in TiVo DVRs sometime after June, 2009. I’m a bit surprised by this deal because when TiVo lined up a deal with Netflix, I thought they were choosing sides between Blockbuster and Netflix. This makes the TiVo more computer-like in the way you can access video services. I wonder what they will add next.
TiVo aims to be the Google of television with new TiVo Search
Normally, you could search for shows on a TiVo, but it was far from elegant. Today, January 7, 2009, TiVo announced its upgraded TiVo Search that should allow for users to still get search results, but also discover content.
Content suggestions are pulled from television listings and also from the Internet. You might find a clip from YouTube that is related to a television show that you watch. With thousands of programs on television, it’s hard finding new things to watch. A “discovery engine” is a great idea to find fresh shows.
TiVo gains YouTube support
With the new 9.4 TiVo software update, it seems that everybody’s favorite DVR has gained YouTube support. This brings up the total YouTube compatible devices to, uh, very high. Subscribers of TiVo’s HD and Series 3 devices will get the update as soon as the next few days, and as late as the next few more »
