The top tech prospects of 2009
What technologies are going to go mainstream in 2009? The following four technologies will shape your everyday life starting in 2009. Don’t expect everything to change by tomorrow, but you’ll see.
Wireless USB
While wireless USB hubs are currently available, they are priced too high for widespread adoption. I expect this to become much cheaper in 2009 with more devices sporting wireless USB built in. Keep reading for the complete list.
Major players support Sprint’s XOHM WiMAX mobile broadband network
To coincide with the official launch of Sprint’s 4G mobile broadband service called XOHM (its WiMAX network), four top PC brands have introduced new notebook products which support XOHM. For those not in the loop, WiMAX is faster than what you usually get from a mobile phone 3G network.
If you are seriously considering getting a new notebook that fully supports the XOHM WiMAX network, we have a rundown of the new notebooks from Acer, Asus, Lenovo and Toshiba after the break.
Acer announces WiMAX laptops
You know that WiMAX over in Baltimore? The one you have to buy an external device to connect to? Now there’s another option, two options actually. Acer has announced two laptops that can connect to the XOHM WiMAX in Baltimore.
The notebooks.com article seems to hint that they will only be available to those in Baltimore. Though since they are being sold on NewEgg and TigerDirect, it would make sense anyone could buy them. The WiMAX presumably would only be useful in the cities that have WiMAX, or at least those that have WiMAX from XOHM.
Future of Tech: Cell Phones
With the great wireless race of the early 21st century going on in the US, just getting 3G, both EVDO and UMTS/HSPA, adopted across the nation is proving to be slow going. While Europe and Asia have had some awesome phones with 3G and mobile TV to name a few features for quite some time, over here in the States we have been focused on buying the cheapest phone. Either that, or the RAZR which has been bought to death.
Now that the 700MHz spectrum auction has been finished and Verizon Wireless has been declared the victor, they are already making plans for the future of their spectrum. They have decided to go the LTE (Long Term Evolution) route as their “4G Network,” which can bring download speeds of up to 170Mbps or 325Mbps depending on the tower configuration. This also means that Verizon can switch to an all IP-network, essentially using VoIP to have voice conversations. Plus, this means they will have oodles and oodles of bandwidth at their expense for whatever they decide.
Sprint gives the bad news, WiMAX will be delayed
Sprint Nextel has announced the planned roll-out of their Xohm WiMAX will be delayed. According to a company spokesperson we can now expect it “later in the year” but rumor has it that it will come sometime this summer. Sprint was also quick to make it clear that the delay was not due to anything more »
Nokia officially announces the WiMAX Edition N810
Nokia has let the WiMAX Edition N810 out of the bag, of course this comes as not much of a surprise, the rumors have been on-going, not to mention the in-the-wild style photo earlier this morning. It is nice however to get all the official details.
