Wing Commander Arena, Super Contra hit Xbox Live

Recent Xbox Live Arcade additions include EA’s Wing Commander Arena and a port of the arcade version of Super Contra from Konami.

Coming in at 800 points (USD $10), the multiplayer-focused Wing Commander Arena features 16 player multiplayer versus, a first for Xbox Live Arcade. There are 18 ships and a bunch of other customizable weapons. Other amazing features include single player mode and (gasp) achievements. It’s too bad this title is on a 2D plane and isn’t a fully 3D space shooter.

At 400 points (USD $5), Super Contra features the classic shooting action a small screen in the middle of a hideous border, like so many of the mediocre arcade ports available on the Arcade. Players can play single player or co-op and choose between the original sprites and “enhanced graphics,” which is probably code for “a filter that makes the game blurry.” The game also has the standard achievements and leaderboards we expect from Xbox Live titles.

The previous week’s arcade titles were Hudson’s Bomberman Live (800 points) and Konami’s Yie-Ar Kung Fu arcade port (400 points).
