Activision has released more details about their upcoming Spider-Man brawler, called Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, to be released Fall 2007 for all platforms.
Players will once again assume the role of Spider-Man as he is called into action to overcome a worldwide threat, although the details of the game’s storyline are still under wraps. What we do know is that the game is drawing inspiration from not only the Spider-Man movie trilogy but also from Spidey’s comic book roots. This certainly allows for a wealth of possibilities in terms of storyline branches and overall game content.
Unlike previous Spider-Man games, Spidey won’t be fighting solo. In Friend or Foe, players will be able to choose an ally that will assist in dispatching enemies. The two-character fighting scheme will allow for team combos to be unleashed, plus the inherent powers and attributes of Spidey’s chosen ally can be used to solve puzzles or access otherwise unreachable areas. A second player can join in at any time and initiate co-op play, which is a first for a Spider-Man game. So far, Activision has only released Blade and Iron Fist as allies but is certain to add to that list as the release date draws near.
One of the game’s more unique features is that everyone’s favorite web-slinger will be able to convert and then fight side-by-side with some of his most notorious rivals, such as Sandman and the Green Goblin. These new allies have their own powers and attributes that can be used in certain areas to unlock otherwise inaccessible areas and secrets, in addition to opening up new gameplay and team combo possibilities. To go along with Spider-Man: Friend or Foe‘s gameplay, Activision promises a Versus mode for one-on-one fighting, mini-games, and plenty of unlockables and secrets to be uncovered.
It will be interesting to see how Activision’s take on the Lego Star Wars games works in the Spider-Man universe, without the Legos, of course. There’s definitely potential here, as well as a wealth of source material to draw from. Good brawlers are hard to come by these days and, if there’s enough depth to keep players coming back, Activision could have a surprise hit on its hands. We’ll be keeping a watchful eye on this title as the ship date draws near.
