It’s gift guide time people! It’s that time of year when I tell you about awesome stuff from Japan, be it games or novelties, that you should give as gifts to people you love. This year we’ll have handheld and novelty gift guides, but no console. See, most of the good PS3 import games have already been picked up and released or are scheduled to be released outside of Japan, so there aren’t any console games to really worry about. So we’re going to power through. First, I’ll recommend handheld games for you to give to people this week, then next time I’ll recommend goodies to get.

There’s one thing you’ll probably notice about this list – there are no 3DS games on it. The 3DS is region-locked, so I’m not recommending any 3DS game gifts. You could buy one, then find out the person doesn’t have a Japanese 3DS, then you’d feel guilty like you’d have to buy them a Japanese 3DS so they could play the game you bought them and it would just be a big mess. So we’re sticking with PSP and PS Vita recommendations this year. I’d say DS, PSP and Vita, but there haven’t really been any awesome DS games released in Japan this year.

Hatsune Miku Project Diva f
Price: around $80
System: Vita
Cero Rating: Cero C for Ages 15+
Genre: Music
Description: Players can tap and swipe along to over 30 Vocaloid songs, while also interacting with the Vocaloids in their rooms or importing their own songs to make custom tracks and videos.
Import Friendly? Very. It’s a music game so you don’t need to understand the text. Not that even the text is a big problem, as most of the menus have English text or images to help with navigation. Using the custom song creator does require Japanese knowledge – or access to a guide online.

The Idolm@ster Shiny Festa
Price: around $70
System: PSP
Cero Rating: Cero B for Ages 12+
Genre: Music
Description: Help the Idolm@ster girls perform music videos and dance along with the songs at the right time.
Import Friendly? Very. It’s a straightforward music game with Idolm@ster songs. Just consult with the person you’re buying it for first to ensure you get the version with the idols they want as there are three: Groovy Tune, Funky Note and Honey Sound.

Sol Trigger
Price: around $70
System: PSP
Cero Rating: Cero C for Ages 15+
Genre: RPG
Description: The Sol Trigger warriors must use their magical abilities and power to fight the Shinki Church’s Makina monsters and save the Poeple of Light. However, you have to be careful as the Sol Trigger warriors attacks drain their souls and if you overwork someone, they die.
Import Friendly? Not so much, as it’s an RPG with a lot of text.

Surge Concerto: Ciel no Surge
Price: around $60
System: Vita
Cero Rating: Cero C for Ages 15+
Genre: RPG
Description: Rashera is being battered by a sun that is killing people who don’t take to special homes in the skies. The one way to save the world is to go inside the princess Ion’s memory with a fairy named Ciel to heal her. Restore Ion and you restore Rashera.
Import Friendly? It’s region-free, sure, but it also is an RPG with tons of text so only get it for people who can read Japanese.

Tales of Innocence R
Price: around $70
System: Vita
Cero Rating: Cero B for Ages 12+
Genre: Action RPG
Description: People in the Regnum have started to display unusual powers that seem to possibly be tied to past lives. Naturally, this isn’t accepted by the government and people at large, and people with these abilities are rounded up by police. A young man named Ruca discovers he has these powers and runs off with a girl named Illia who also has these abilities.
Import Friendly? Maybe. There are Tales of Innocence guides online from the DS game to refer to and most Tales games have similar gameplay. People will enjoy it most, however, if they understand what’s going on in the game.

Time Travelers
Price: around $65
System: Vita
Cero Rating: Cero C for Ages 15+
Genre: Adventure
Description: It’s 2031 and the world is ending. Only five people who have met and interacted with a girl named Mikoto can work together to save the world.
Import Friendly? No. This is a text-based adventure game and if you can’t read Japanese, you won’t get any enjoyment out of it.

Valkyria Chronicles III: Unrecorded Chronicles
Price: around $60
System: PSP
Cero Rating: Cero B for Ages 12+
Genre: Strategy RPG
Description: Follow The Nameless Gallian Army Squad during the Second Europan War and take on the missions that Gallia needs done, but can’t publicly address.
Import Friendly? Yes, in that it’s region-free, but no in that it’s very text heavy.
