Nintendo Europe has just announced the release of Zelda spin-off Freshly Picked: Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland, set for September 14, 2007. The game is a quirky RPG starring the most infamous man-fairy from the Legend of Zelda series, and promises “innovative touch screen controls” along with modified Zelda style gameplay.
Though no US release has been announced, and it’s completely unclear exactly who the target demographic is for this game, it actually sounds quite fun from a gameplay perspective. The controls are almost entirely stylus based and the game is built around rupee acquisition rather than the standard Zelda formula of dungeon exploration. Find item that allows further exploration and ass-kickery and repeat.
Also featured is a unique map-making system, an interesting use of NPC’s (you hire bodyguards to pick locks and help in fights), and plenty of dungeon spelunking.
There’s no escaping the (intentional?) hilarity of playing as money obsessed man who wishes he were a fairy, nor the *ahem* colorful cover. The character is a complete joke but what’s surprising is how legitimately good his game sounds. Here’s hoping for a US release, preferably with a paper bag alongside every copy to hide it from your friends.
