We now know a few more details about The Binding of Issac remake thanks to a postmortem written by the game’s visionary Edmund McMillen on Gamasutra. The game will be called The Binding of Issac: Rebirth, and it’ll be published by Nicalis (Cave Story, NightSky, VVVVVV).
McMillen allowed Nicalis to take over publishing duties for a few reasons:
- Nicalis will handle all the business and red tape associated with developing console games.
- Rebirth will include an expansion that couldn’t fit into The Binding of Issac
- Rebirth will have local co-op
- Rebirth will have 16-bit graphics while maintaining its Flash-based looks
It isn’t clear which platforms The Binding of Issac: Rebirth will appear on, but McMillen has some ideas.
“Both Microsoft and Sony feel like it would be a perfect fit for their digital platforms, and we have a feeling the new look might soften up a few people at Nintendo for a possible Wii U/3DS eShop release,” McMillen said. “I’m wary about how the game might control on iPad, but if they can make it work, I’m all for it.”
The Binding of Issac: Rebirth is expected to be released in 2013.
