Zynga often gets a bad rap for how it conducts business, but there are some genuinely interesting games attached to Zynga that are made by other companies. Horn was one, and Clay Jam is another. Clay Jam (developed by Fat Pebble) was released today for Android and iOS. It’s a free game that involves rolling a ball of clay down a hill. Wait, there’s more to it than that. I promise.
You see, the world of Clay Jam has been conquered by creatures called Bully Beasts. You play as Fat Pebble, a small ball of clay that gets bigger when it squishes monsters and structures. You have to carve lines in the clay hills to guide Fat Pebble towards the squishable objects. When you reach the bottom of the hill, you have to swipe Fat Pebble quickly so that he can build up enough speed to smash into the Bully Beast that’s blocking the way.
The monsters you squish provide currency that you can use to create more monsters that will populate the hill. Clay currency is also used to unlock new stages that have different themes. The cheapest level costs 250 Clay, but one level costs 10,000 Clay. This is where in-game purchases come in, and they can get expensive. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like spending real money is a requirement in this game.
I applaud Fat Pebble for using a really unique art style for this game. Everything really does give the impression that it’s made out of clay. This is one game I think you should at least check out even if you don’t stick with it for long.
