Gamertell Attorney general Seal Rhode Island Is it raining cats and dogs in your town yet? I might have already started to in Rhode Island where Attorney General Patrick Lynch (Democrat) has announced he will work with the ESRB to create videgame public service announcements (PSAs). The goal is to help promote awareness of potential video game content issues through radio and TV ads.

Lynch will apparently appear/talk in the PSAs with his 12-year-old daughter, Kelsy, and 11-year-old son, Graham. Lynch said in his press release:

“Before children and teenagers grab the controls to play a video game, we’re asking parents to control the types of games their kids play by checking the game’s rating,” Lynch said. “Most parents routinely check the ratings of movies before taking or allowing their children to see films, and I’m honored to join with ESRB to ask parents to use that same level of vigilance concerning video games. It’s up to us, as parents, to take every measure possible to increase protections for our children. Using the excellent ESRB rating system is an extremely important and positive step.”

Finally, a politician who can recognize the benefit of the ESRB and work with it instead of trying to circumvent it with legislation that simply pisses off and alienates game-lovin’ voters. As one comment at GamePolitics says, “Score one for the good guys.” Better yet – vote for guys like Lynch. It might be time to break out the “I play videogames and I vote” bumper stickers (or try the “I’m a a gamer and I vote” sticker.)
