Blades of Glory

The popular online game/alternate reality, Second Life, will be hosting Blades of Glory themed events beginning August 24, 2007, through the end of the month to celebrate the DVD release of the summer comedy starring Will Ferrell and Jon Heder. The multi-million dollar grossing movie details the rise and fall of two men’s figure skaters who are banned from the sport for malicious tomfoolery. They’re able to skate competitively again via a loophole in the regulations but they must skate together as the first ever male doubles team. Hilarity ensues.

Second Life users who go to any of the 12 available skating rinks will be able to don some of the flamboyant costumes that appeared in the movie as well as skates that will endow skaters with the power to bust out some of the epic choreography from the movie. Anyone who visits all twelve rinks by the end of the month will have the chance to win a grand prize of $10,000 Linden dollars, various sporting goods and, of course, a copy of the movie.

It looks like this year might well go down in history as the year the ad execs officially crapped their pants and frantically searched for new outlets to reach potential customers. Get yourself a change of underwear boys, we’ve got you on the run! Still, virtual release parties do sound kind of…well…fun. Dammit. They’ve won again. Curse you all!
