One of the greatest tragedies of the rapid decline of the PSP was that it left people wondering what would become of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter. XSEED had localized the original The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky to rave reviews. And why not? It was an extraordinary JRPG bursting with content, heart and attention to the tiniest of details. It was extraordinary.

It also ended on a cliffhanger.

Naturally, this left PSP owners wanting more. They went to XSEED, which has ties with Nihon Falcom and has pretty much commited itself to releasing that companies games outside of Japan. Could it bring over The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter? The response didn’t seem very positive. XSEED spoke to Siliconera and said the second game wasn’t a priority for a number of reasons. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter, to start, as it filled two PSP UMDs. That means months, maybe even over a year worth of translating work. To compare, in an interview with RPGamer, XSEED staff estimated the original The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky took 10 months to localize and it was a one UMD game.

Then there are the sales figures. XSEED hasn’t revealed an exact number for how many copies of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky sold, but did say it wasn’t one of their top selling titles. If the original game doesn’t perform well, that can kill the release of the sequel. Which would mean The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter has two strikes against it.

However, there is now hope. After The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky HD Edition was announced, meaning the series would appear on the PS3, people hoped the sequel would get a similar treatment. Now, one week before The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky HD Edition‘s December 13, 2012 Japanese debut, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter HD Edition has been announced and given an April 25, 2013 release date. A one-two punch of these games make for a perfect 2013 surprise for North American gamers.

It’d be a very feasible proposition. XSEED has already finished the translation for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky HD Edition has no extra content besides a graphical tune-up. It shouldn’t be too much trouble to pop it onto the PlayStation Store for PS3 owners to enjoy. Not to mention that’d guarantee it a larger audience and may even boost sales of the original PSP game for Vita owners who’d like to enjoy it on the go. It’s save file is compatible with both the PSP and PS3 versions of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky.

This could then lead into a The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter HD Edition. Perhaps XSEED has been holding out on us when it’s been talking about what it’s been doing with The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter. Maybe people have been working on the script when they had time. Even if they haven’t, I’m sure eager PS3 owners would be more than happy to wait for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter HD Edition after enjoying The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky HD Edition.

This leads into another opportunity. Nihon Falcom has been trying to prepare The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter for a Japanese PlayStation Store release. It’s been taking a while, what with the whole two UMD thing. In an ideal world, both The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter for the PSP and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter HD Edition for the PS3 would receive a simultaneous PlayStation Store release. Like The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky HD Edition, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter HD Edition‘s save file works with the PSP version. There could even be some kind of cross-buy promotion, to encourage people with a PS3 and Vita, or in this case PS3, Vita and PSP, to buy the game.

In short, this announcement is something to be excited about and people interested in The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky series should respectfully approach XSEED and made their desires known. If XSEED knows we’re passionate about it, great things could happen.
